Movie recommendations for your grandparents to watch

First you are young; then you are middle-aged; then you are old; then you are wonderful.” – Diana Cooper

A few days back we were searching for movies appropriate to watch for our grandmother which belong to the 21st or 20th century but something relatable.

It’s a bit hard because you will surely want her to enjoy the movie and also have a relatable storyline. Also, an added point will be present if her favorite actor or actress is seen in the movie.

1.AARAKSHAN:-

After a little detailed research, my husband came up with Aarakshan. He had watched the movie and knew Aarakshan to be a relatable movie for them. Aarakshan means quota system with Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone as main characters and there are many more but the storyline seemed to be simple and relatable. Now here I am not going to share the story, it’s for you to watch and enjoy.

2. Uchchai

This movie was watched initially by my mother-in-law and later we played it for our grandmother. The movie shows what old friendship is like and what genuine friendship makes us feel what kind of optimistic friendship we want. The movie has a wonderful cast like Amitabh Bachchan, Danny Denzonpa, Sarika, Parineeti Chopra, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Neena Gupta. The film is beautiful and yes our grandmother enjoyed it.

3. Tonic

Tonic is for your grandparents if they are Bengali or they understand through subtitles. Tonic is written in a very relatable way. Something of family drama but very touching as someone’s grandfather gets to fulfill his or her dreams. Dreams are so important for us to believe and yes age is just a number indeed if you have passion for something you can do it. Watch with your grandma or grandparents and enjoy.

4. Darpochurna-

It is a Bengali movie. This is one of the old movies which will be liked by every old person in the family. This is a story based on Sarat Chandra Bose’s story Darpachurna. The movie has casts like Sandhya Ray, Soumitra Chatterjee and Uttam Kumar. The story revolves around family and how relationships matter. It is very much relatable and the ack-and-white combination gives a balanced effect on its audience. Do watch it if you have not already.

5 Chander Pahar-

This is again a Bengali movie which got dubbed in numerous other languages like Odia, Hindi and Assamese. It is based on Chander Pahar by Bibhuti Bhushan Bandapadhya. As Bengalis, our grandparents have read the book and followed by our parent’s generation follow by next. When this film was shown to our grandmother she was extremely overjoyed by the animation. The storyline was exactly how one would imagine by reading the book. It is a must for any old person to watch.

Also, these are the movies she has already watched. Now we are planning for a couple of Bengali movies, Hindi movies and English movies to watch like – Bengalis like Posto, Belaseshe, Belashuru, Ramdhonu, Hindi like – Tare Zameen par, paa and lots more.

She used to watch a lot of movies in her time of youth and middle age now when TV serials and restrictive body movement became an issue she watches movies but not so frequently. ALSO thanks to my mother-in-law and husband for making her life happen and the movie accessible.

6. Meghe Dakha Tara –

What can we say about Ritwik Ghotok directorial movie Meghe Dakha Tara. It is a phenomenal masterpiece in the Bengali film history. With subtle relationship and bonding with each other there’s so much it has. A must watch if you haven’t already.

7. Harano Sur –

Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen was explicit and phenomenal on screen couple for about 14 films. Amongst them Harano Sur is one. The acting with timing, expression, bonding, director, everyone is worth the time. These movies are in Black and white but when the movies are extremely good it hardly matters whether it is black and white or coloured. All the movies of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen are must watch.

Thank you
