Every Name has a Story

What’s the story behind your nickname?

Nicknames are an interesting manner of referring to people. Mostly they are an affectionate way in which our close ones refer to us. They contain a certain charm of closeness. Whenever we hear it, our mind and heart instantly jump into the familiar territory of love and warmth.

There are also some nicknames which get associated with us as a result of an achievement, a habit or even a particular incident which is widely remembered by people. At the same time, not all nicknames have a positive thought behind it and such nicknames can become a bad experience or memory.

I have had many nicknames in my life up till now. My late maternal grandfather gave me several, people who knew me through him always called me by one of those nicknames. I remember how fond he was of giving creative nicknames, every young boy and girl (now grown) in my mother’s side of family has a nickname given by him.
My maternal grandmother gave me another nickname, a nickname which was unique because she was the only one who called me with it; somehow her progressing old age has maybe taken the nickname out of her memory and it has been a while since I have last heard it, but I will remember it forever.

The nickname given to me by paternal grandparents was the one that primarily stuck with me. Several of my friends and relatives refer to me with that name including my father. I think that’s the nickname which will stick with me to the last.

Most of the nicknames given to me by friends or classmates were for a brief period. Some of them were particular nicknames called by particular friends. I am sure if I am to meet anyone of them, they will refer me with those unique names again.

I have preserved all the nicknames given to me in my mind and heart, and only time will tell how long will these sweet references last. I hope they do till my final days.
