The Listener

I gave a slight twist to my wrist; the display of my smartwatch woke up to reveal the present time. It was 9:08 am.

I stared out the glass partition on my right, there were a few people. With the exception of some, the other shops hadn’t yet opened.

I returned back to what I was here to do, I took another bite of the sandwich which I was holding in my right hand. I rarely come out to have breakfast, although I admit it has a charm of its own. So, this was one of those rare occurrences.

My friend was done with his call, so we retraced back to what we were doing, conversating.

“You are a good listener,” I said as I renewed the conversation.

My friend was about to take a sip of his tea, when he heard what I had said, he paused, gave me an expression which said he wasn’t expecting it, then he completed the sipping of his tea.

I continued, “It is my observation. I have rarely come across people who have listened to my words with as much attention and patience as you have.”

“Maybe you are a good speaker,” he said with what I felt was a hint of smile on his face.

“I wouldn’t know. But I know, only a good listener can do justice to the words of a good speaker, otherwise those words may just be of less meaning or use to ears of another.”

“Hmm… don’t we all want to be listened to?” he spoke.

We both looked out the glass partition, almost at the same time. The people were still few, the shops which hadn’t opened still remained closed.
