A Musical Happening

Sudhir opened his eyes and took in a slow long breath. The violin remained on his left shoulder with left hand holding the violin’s neck. The bow was still over the string, although not touching them.

Sudhir slowly kept the violin down and turned to see his wife Ruchi who still seemed to be in the zone that the music had taken her into. It was a second Saturday and a holiday, Ruchi had insisted on listening to Sudhir play the violin after lunch.

Sudhir placed the violin back into the case and went inside to keep it in the cupboard of the study room. As he closed the doors of the cupboard, Sudhir sighed and paused for a minute.

It had been almost a year since Sudhir and Ruchi married. It was a love marriage, the relationship before marriage was of a few months. When they were in the initial phase of the relationship, Sudhir had falsified a little about his knowing a little about playing violin since Ruchi loved to listen to music played on violin.

Now, it would have ended well there and forgotten, but Sudhir went a step ahead. He borrowed a violin from his father’s friend who was a music teacher and then he learnt to play a particular Indian classical music on it. There are videos of all kinds teaching how to play instruments online.

On one fine day when Sudhir surprisingly proposed to Ruchi on the terrace of his friend’s house, he played the tune on the violin. It was supposed to be a one-time memorable thing, so he never really clarified that he had learnt to play the instrument and the tune just for that one little performance.

The act of Sudhir the romantic violinist spread among Ruchi’s friends and family and it spread too far too fast for Sudhir to clarify that he had no interest in the instrument but only the one who loved to hear it play. The video of Sudhir playing had even made its way to the social media, ‘An Enchanting Musical Proposal’ it was titled.

Sudhir had this fear of disappointing people which is what led to him buying a violin and practising it further, now he plays it for Ruchi’s family, Ruchi’s friends, some neighbours whom Ruchi had told about it, when they visited them at home. As for Sudhir’s family and friends, they were quite surprised how far Sudhir had gone with it, but they were also happy, after all it is a beautiful instrument which produces music which touches the heart and soul.

“You must feel some change within you playing violin. I think there is a certain aura around people who associate themselves to music,” I said to Sudhir one day when we met for lunch

“You know, there are things, which we may not like to do or don’t have interest in, but we do it nonetheless because there is a certain value which we get in return. This is just one of those things,” said Sudhir
