Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?
Every time I think of patriotism, it usually begins with the Independence Day parade. It’s one of the most memorable events I can think of that had appealed to the rise of patriotism within me towards my country, when I was small. The display of culture and capabilities always provides that sense of pride and also the yearning that even if by the drop, maybe I can do something as well.
Even if it may have been for a brief period, the military has crossed the minds of many. I don’t think there is another part of a nation that is so often directly connected to patriotism by many and that feeling strong or light, will very likely remain in the minds of many.
The history is full of figures, remembered through many references as people who stood up for the nation and did remarkable things. Their names are in school books, as well as etched in the remembrance of all. Yes, they were true patriots and thanks to them, the nation did change and as a result of their efforts we presently live in a nation quite different from the one in which they existed. For the better or for the worse, we keep on progressing and envisioning a better future for the nation as whole.
I will say the patriotism that is needed today is to understand something basic yet essential. In a time, which many refer to as ‘peaceful’, educated decisions can be made. Treat the nation as one big home and accordingly care for it. I feel my hope wavering when I see educated people make the most insensible decisions, people expecting others to solve a problem while being irresponsible themselves.
A lot can go right with just the bare minimum effort of being aware and spreading that awareness and things can be a lot better when taking a certain amount of responsibility in hand.
