Where would you go on a shopping spree?
I used to dislike book fairs. I cannot resist them; I like to believe this is one event where I am among a group of people who in majority have a certain depth of understanding. Although I have never tried to verify that and have completely ignored the news like the one where one where a book-seller decided to give away books for free on the last day in the remaining few hours and people came like waves of ocean and may have traumatised him for life.
So, I cannot resist book fairs and there are books there, a lot of books everywhere, a lot the mind and heart would like to have. I stopped carrying credit cards to the fairs, so that even if I returned from there a man in a far worse financial condition than before, at least I wouldn’t be in debt. That was my place for a shopping spree, I would drain a month or two of savings in buying books only to realise later that I may never have time to read all the books and I may have overspent. But the later realisation took no part in helping me not overspend next year again.
In the present it’s all fine, I don’t have to worry about all that. No, I did not secure a high paying job or come across some family investment unknown to me before, it was the nature of work that changed.
When I set out to find more meaning in the world than my work as content editor, I came across another field, it had a board hanging and it said book reviews. I had written some book reviews for children’s newspapers here and there, but how could I have not known it was a living and breathing field with its own entirety. Although I take great effort in the reviews with my partner, but you know where this is going, the real happiness is in the ever-increasing stack of books.

What a wonderfully honest and engaging reflection. Your love for book fairs comes through so vividly—the excitement, the irresistible pull of shelves filled with possibilities, and that familiar struggle between the heart that wants every book and the practical mind that hesitates. I especially enjoyed the gentle humor in your storytelling.
It’s also inspiring to see how your journey eventually led you into the world of book reviews, turning that deep love for books into meaningful work. A thoughtful and beautifully relatable piece for every true book lover.
