Jorashanko Thakurbari visit

Being Bengali we all are associated, loved and linked with Rabindranath Tagore, the first Bangali, India and Asia to win a Nobel Prize. Rabindranath Tagore is an exceptional poet, song writer, dramatist, activist, student empowerment, a father a husband and every other quality rolled into one. We always visit Rabindranath Tagore’s house.

The house with ambience of Tagore’s joy, may be the window from where he busked into the afternoon sunlight and hence his poems were written. The courtyard, the balcony, the endless roofs, the dining hall, the living room, the rooms which seemed like rooms of interconnected jigsaw puzzle of growing up in a family of zamindari culture to the tune of poetic ambience of long courtyards and the simple joy of childhood laughter.

We wanted to see everything and see whether the tales stories we have heard from our grandparents matches or not and whether the lingering laughter of thakurbari is still presence amidst the great pillars and courtyard or not.?

We had to go the university of Calcutta because of I was supposed to get back my 3 semester marksheet (You know covid teaches us lot) After collecting my much awaited marksheet we headed towards the Jorashanko house of Tagore, popularly known as ” Thakurbari”

It takes 10 minutes walking from Calcutta University to Thakurbari.

How to reach Thakurbari?

Either you can walk if you are solo travellor in the city or if have a company or you know you just walk till the central crossing.

Cross the road towards right and use the pavement to walk.

You have to walk about 5 minutes crossing three signals (crossing)

In the left side you will see a grand typical archaic orange open gate written ” Jorashanko Thakurbari ” in Bengali.

After you enter the gate it needs 2 minutes of walking to enter the house. Ever since we entered the house it seems a beautiful feeling which cannot be explained in words. Learning from childhood about Tagore, reading Tagore and Performing on his birth and death anniversary was something we would look forward for the entire year. And somehow it is just from generations after generations .

To such an amazing the house was specifically designed so that everyone could stay together big and strong with courtyard, open terrace and lots of rooms intertwined together captured all emotions of Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindra nath Tagore and many more. The house has been turned into a museum greatly nostalgic and feeling of a proud Indian. The interconnected joy the write up, the betel leaves boxes gifts from person to another. It’s a beautiful emotion stories and songs and lots of emotions.

It was a lovely visit. Cameras were not allowed in the interior part of the house. But here are the pictures which could click of outside part .

Share with us your story of Thakurbari, Tagore and culture!
