The Child Within

One step at a time, my legs moved. There was occasional sound from the sole of my shoes interacting for a longer period than required with the ground beneath. The frequency of my breath had caught some speed, making my long walk evident. A bag containing the essentials of every day life accompanied me, resting on my shoulder. A few droplets of sweat had emerged on my face.

A distant voice travelled through the air, and then there was another and a few more. I stopped to follow the source, to my right was a playground and near the opposite end of it from where I was standing, were some children, busy in their own world, playing, laughing, enjoying this period of their life.

The view was extremely nostalgic, bringing back emotions I had forgotten were there, hidden beneath what seemed like a lifetime of memories and emotions. I recalled how it felt…. yes.. there was a time I was a child too, completing my studies, waiting for the needle of the clock to rest on the number which declared it was time to go out.

Running through the life outside with the wind against my face, towards the playground, where familiar faces waited; the heart blooming with joy on seeing them. The mind, soul and body brimming with energy and joy, it was time to play… time to forget the world and enjoy to the heart’s content till the disappearing light asked us to follow it back home.

What struck me as best ingredient of childhood, was the innocence of life. In the world of children, where existed no social barriers, a soul which was not stained by the complexities of the world, a heart which didn’t live in fear of being broken, a mind which was capable of venturing far beyond the limitations which we later put on in life.

What is stopping many of us from feeling the same again, apparently no one else but ourselves. Wouldn’t one love to look at the playground and feel the same happiness again. I certainly would love to, so that day, the rest of my way, I smiled and laughed sometimes, my legs had found a new form of energy to move ahead, why? Because….. I was as happy as a child.
