Out into the sunlight

What’s your favorite time of day?

The school bus roared down the road, carrying children who were eager to return home. The bus was full of laughter and chatter of children of different age groups. One can say the school bus carries the future of a nation and even the world in itself.

One of the window seats of the bus was occupied by a boy studying in fifth grade. His name was Abhik, he was a student of fifth grade. On his mind was not what was taught that day nor had any words of the numerous conversations floating in the air of the bus caught his attention. He was thinking about playing his favourite sport football which he played almost every day in the evening in the playground near his house.

Every day he returned from school, had lunch, took a quick nap and revised a bit of what had been taught that day in the school. Meanwhile he waited for his group of his friends, who would call him out to play and out he went enjoying with them till his heartโ€™s content.

I who was at least 10 years older to him, asked him once, โ€œso Abhik which part of the day you love the most?โ€ He was quick to reply with smile, โ€œI love the evenings of course, I get to meet my friends, we talk and we play, we have a good timeโ€. I smiled, such a wonderful time of life indeed it was in his life.

I used to see him here and there now and then but it was only years later, I happen to have a proper conversation with Abhik again. He was deep into adulthood, he had a job now, not married yet. We talked about each otherโ€™s well-being, families, work among some other things.

I chuckled a little and asked Abhik, โ€œAre evenings still the part of the day you love the most?โ€
He gave a smile which was clearly affected by a certain realisation, โ€œI wish they still were. But now it seems at the end of the day when I lie on my bed, that short period of time before I fall asleep, thatโ€™s the best part of my day. I feel relaxed and relieved, and I get to spend some time in peace with myself.โ€

I gave a slight nod of understanding as I could relate to what he said. I wondered at what point of time in life for some of us, will we get back the time which was well into the realm of the Sun and was the best part of our days.
