Across the shore

How do you relax?

“When I was a small boy, just entering my teenage years, all of us brothers and sisters were living under the same roof. Every day I walked to school and on the way back I took the route which gave me the view of the nearby river. I loved to watch the flowing water of the river and the light from the Sun reflecting on its surface… and the sight of the boatmen rowing their small boats, was a sight I always thought was out of a painting.”

“You see back then, the water was so clear, the air was so clean, calls of so many different birds could be heard around the river, one could just sit by the river forever it seemed.”

“One day my elder brother whispered into my ear that one of his friend’s uncle was a boatman and he could arrange for the two of us to have a boat ride. I was a little sceptical about my brother’s friend and his uncle, but then one of our school’s teacher agreed to accompany us after talking to our parents.”

“Early in the morning before the break of dawn, me, my brother and my teacher walked towards the river, where the boatman was waiting. We began our ride. Sound of insects and water splashing against the boat filled the surrounding area. My brother pointed out to the sky giving way to light.”

“The light spread in its pace as I gazed at the horizon and in that moment I felt completely relaxed, like the time had slowed down just for me to feel the beauty of this moment”

My grandfather looked at me and ask “have you ever had this kind of feeling of relaxation?”.

I smiled as I met his gaze.. I felt listening to him recount this instance of his life had made me feel the same.

  1. Beautiful piece of writing. The flowing water of river, chirping of birds ,the full moon illuminating the night sky and many such things relax our mind. We are at peace with ourselves.

  2. As I read “You see back then, the water was so clear, the air was so clean” I was wondering what “back then” is Anuran referring to. I made a mental note to ask.
And then cam the last para, the twist, You have Anuran a flair of story telling. Loved it. River, boat, dawn breaking …..U wrote so well. Stay blessed.
