The Food Disaster

Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

The aroma of delicious food being cookedโ€ฆ spreading through the household is a remarkable experience in itself.

The happiness and satisfaction of having a favourite culinary delight to quench the hunger of mind, body and soul adds to the various chronicles of oneโ€™s life. We often seem to vividly remember the taste of the food we love to eat in a manner in which it seems it be almost within the grasp of our very mouth.

I am a person who loves to indulge in having a variety of food and I believe if one loves to eat then he/she should definitely try to learn cooking. Cooking is an essential life skill after all.

At present my cooking skills are average but safely edible, however, once in a blue moon I do manage to surprise my taste buds with my cooking. Although in my defence, it hasnโ€™t been long since I have developed any form of close to proper skills in cooking.

The thing I first learnt to make as a child which also led to what I call the greatest cooking failure of my life, was in form of instant noodles. Instant noodles are one of the easiest food items that can be made and they are loved by almost everyone no matter what the age group.

So, I learnt to make instant noodles as a child, it was a moment of great pride at that point, I could cook something now. Put the noodle cake in hot water and the packet of spices that came with it, and in a few minutes it was ready. But then I learnt from others there were many different ways to prepare it, you could add vegetables and a few spices separately.

Hence, I made up my mind, I was going to make the tastiest instant noodles that was ever made. So, in the hot water along with the noodle cake and the packet of spices I added more salt than required, onions, tomatoes and capsicum which were not properly chopped, a few eggs and then to add colour I added red chilli powder, a lot of red chilli powder now that I recall.

So, I proudly presented to my friends the result of my cooking brilliance which I thought at that moment was way ahead of what they could make, and each of them almost at once ate a spoonful of the greatest instant noodles. I was waiting to welcome the smiles and appreciations but instead there were tears and expression of great discomfort followed by spitting of the undercooked vegetables. All of them had an upset stomach and I had one of the worst nightmares of my life.

I think it was quite a while before I cooked anything else again although I can definitely make good instant noodles now, but I doubt my friends will have the courage to try it again even today.

  1. Well written. The first time trial cooking can sometimes be a disaster.I remember my first baked cake, due to overheat ,burnt from bottom, was a disaster, though the aroma of the baked cake was wonderful.
