The Welcomed Follower

What is good about having a pet?

The matchstick was struck against the phosphorous-coated surface on the side of the matchbox and the match head ignited giving birth to a small delicate flame. The burning matchstick was brough near the wick of a tealight candle and the flame spread from the matchstick to the wick. Then, I placed the burning tealight candle on top of the boundary wall, ensuring it was placed safely and everything around was quite out of the range of its flame. We- me and my wife, were done placing the tealight candles on the ground floor. When seen together, they looked like a row of flames dancing together. It was time to move to the upper floors to spread more light around the house.
It was the festival of lights. Candles, diyas and a variety of decorative artificial lights could be seen appearing in every direction as the light of the Sun slowly abandoned the sky.
Me and my wife started climbing the stairs to the upper floor. It wasn’t long before we realised, we were being followed. The distinct sound of four bare paws moving against the floor was very much audible.
We went to the first balcony of the first floor and placed three tealight candles there, well out of the reach of the certain someone who had followed us there. Our follower was quite observant for a while of what was being done there and then she became busy with observing the surrounding.
We closed the balcony door after ensuring our follower had left the balcony and then we moved ahead towards the balcony of the next room. We saw that our follower had already reached the door of the room and was trying to unsuccessfully open it. It was quite interesting how she had figured out that we would go to that room and not to the room next to it.
We placed the tealight candles in the balcony of this room in the same manner as the previous one. However, this time our follower instead of observing what we were doing had made use of the opportunity to pounce on the bed, rolling over the blankets and throwing some of the pillows down on the floor. We had no choice but to take strict action this time against our follower, we sternly asked her to get down the bed which she did much to her dislike.
From here onwards, our follower behaved quite well, quietly following us through the rest of the house while we placed the rest of the tealight candles.
Finally, we climbed down the stairs towards the ground floor. Our follower seemed quite confused as to whether she wanted to stay on the upper floor or wanted follow us down. As soon as we were out of sight our follower decided to follow our path and join us in preparation of dinner.
Pet, a term we don’t use for either our dog or our fish. They are as much our family as any other human members and there is nothing to hate about life when we have the support of our family, no matter in what form.
