The Year-The Time-The World

One day I woke up from sleep in my grandparents’ house and realised I had woken up in this world with a new consciousness. Maybe it was due to good sleep or I was having an intriguing dream, but I know one thing for certain that I have never woken up the same way again, and the day was my birthday. This happened when it had already been a few years since my arrival in this world and I use this day as a marker when I think of my past.

Presently, I have spent quite many years in the world when measured by present human lifespan; and it all began on a day in November of 1991. The air was clear, the iciness in the air could be vividly felt. The internet tells me the temperature that day was between 52 °F to 44 °F, but it has always been windy here hence the cold is felt more intensely than it actually is.

There were definitely many more people at family gatherings than there are now, and the old of the present were people who had no problem walking, remembering things or talking properly back then.

My father was still in the developing stage of his career, and my grandfathers were partially retired because they never completely stopped working their entire lives.

The needs of people were few back then hence it didn’t take long for a person to settle down with a decent saving. One car or scooter or bike was sufficiently big possession along with a house in a lifetime.

The birds, yes there were many beautiful birds in the sky, on the trees, on the ground, everywhere. One could see and hear all types of birds right out of their windows.

It was a lot greener around. Sometimes, I find it funny how people refer to trees like an old building that once existed, ‘You know there used to be a huge tree at the place where the bus stand is situated now.’

Modernisation has brought many things or as they are termed ‘conveniences’ to our lives but in reality, whether we have gained more or lost more over the years is a question with a long-term answer. I personally would like to believe if I were an adult in 1991, I would be a bit happier and more satisfied with life than I am today.
