A Sip of Warmth, a Bite of Emotion

What snack would you eat right now?

A saucepan was on the induction. Inside it the tea leaves were busy turning the water into a hot beverage. The steam had started to knock on the lid.

The tea vendor removed the lid and steam rushed out in waves and spread out.

The aromatic compound released by the tea leaves accompanied the steam. It delighted the minds and hearts of those waiting and even those who were not.

A city bus halted at the nearby bus stop. People got down, some adjusting their bags, some paying closer attention to their steps, while some got down looking around for their waiting acquaintance or the next transport they intended to catch.

Uday got down from the rear exit of the bus. The cold was intensifying as the night approached. But, could it stop him from having a cup of tea before heading home? No.

A cup of tea was placed in front of Uday, on the table. Uday took a cautious first sip, to come to terms with the hot temperature of the beverage.

The vendor returned with a packet of marie biscuit. The biscuits which were always meant for a cup of tea served somewhere.

Uday opened the packet, and took out a biscuit. He dipped the biscuit in the tea for a second, the biscuit absorbed the tea and became soft. Uday then took a bite out of it before dipping the remaining half of the biscuit.

It was a one of its kind snack. A unique blend between the tea and biscuit. It is a favourite of many, you can ask Uday’s grandmother, who is at the age where she cannot move around a lot but she refuses to lose sight of the box of marie biscuit; she never takes the risk of having tea without a biscuit or two.

The combination has become part of the lives of many, passing through generations, and I hope it continues to do so.

Uday paid and thanked the vendor and headed for home with an energised mind and warm heart. He would be back the next day too, the winter had just begun.

  1. Loved this para:
“Uday got down from the rear exit of the bus. The cold was intensifying as the night approached. But, could it stop him from having a cup of tea before heading home? No.”
The “No.” at the end made all the difference. It made the story for me to come alive.
