Calls of Belongingness

I was enjoying a cup of black tea. My dear mother or my wife time its preparation every day with the time of my arrival home from work. It is not something I have asked them to do for me, but they do it nonetheless. The cup contains not just tea but also the love and care with which they prepare it for me.

Thus, I enjoy the evenings drinking tea which in contrast is different from the rest of the day which I spend with a cup of coffee of two or perhaps more.

I decided to delight my ears to some music. So, I connected my smartphone with the speaker through Bluetooth and I started browsing through my playlists. Believe me when I say, I take this very seriously, the right music can influence and elevate one’s thoughts in the most beautiful ways.

I had almost convinced my mind about what I wanted to hear when my phone notified me of a message from one of my close friends, it read ‘are you free?’. Was I free? Free for spending time with a good friend, sharing the occurrences of life and its results, consequences and learnings? Yes, I was free and I had kept the music in my mind.

It has become a regular part of life. Every other week I would call my friend or he would ask me if I was free and then he would drop by on his way back home from work. We didn’t go to any place in particular and rather drove around, talking and importantly listening to music.

So, the music I had decided upon was playing and we were well like I said driving around. It had been some time, it was getting late. Late enough for us to get calls from our family back home. For me it was my wife who had succeeded my mother in the task, and for my friend it was his mother.

One call had become multiple as further time passed and I saw signs of irritation appearing on my friend’s face. I honestly won’t say I wasn’t feeling a bit of it myself too. That is when I had this thought which I shared with him, “isn’t it a beautiful feeling, knowing someone who loves you and cares for you is waiting back home, and your absence matters to him/her?”

I saw the irritation vanish from his face. I imagined he felt the same warmth of love and belongingness that I did.

  1. Lovely short story. Great ending. As usual nice beginning too.
Love this line that changed the “atmosphere”,”“isn’t it a beautiful feeling, knowing someone who loves you and cares for you is waiting back home, and your absence matters to him/her?”
At this point I realised how the beginning got connected….a cup of tea that had ;love’ in too!
    Great work.
Reminded me of a few lines I wrote a few years back. Frankly I did not remember the exact wordings so had to search for it on my laptop but remembered the feeling I had tried to convey: Pull of the Love, waiting at home….

In the quiet of distance, whispers roam,
    A cherished heart, a guiding light’s tome.
In every step, a tender pull’s known,
Home’s embrace, where love is sown.
Each mile traversed, a promise to stay,
In the warmth of home, hearts forever sway.

    Keep writing, stay blessed.
