Unexpected Learning

Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

A random story can have a permanent long lingering effect if we think about it too often to forget about it..

That’s life..

Mr Bose is 56 year old man.. few years left for his retirement from the government office..

The mundane task and almost 35 years job life helped him to know exactly what to do in office and helped him to have almost 1 to 2 hours free relaxation time…in office itself…

Those times he just accumulates to write something..the ardent feeling of becoming a writer hidden long term… Due to work and family life! But these two hours gave him time to think ponder and write pages …

While writing such on a particular day…Mr Bose remembered how he met someone who has changed the perception of his thought..

And thought that he shall write about her…

Once when Mr Bose newly joined office he used to return home walking… And in the way he noticed the flower seller.. everyday…

For over two weeks he never seen any customer in the shop …the shop footpath shop was owned by An old lady…

The old lady seemed really poor ..but the only thing she did was to sit quietly for customers..no calling ..no discount.. obviously her flowers were only two types 10 and 20..what discount she would give!

Mr Bose after watching her for few days decided to buy flowers from her… After enquiry he understood that if he can buy all the flowers it would cost him 540 rupees .

And what would be most costly?

The smile of the woman

He asked her to pack all the flowers …she couldn’t believe her ears..and said,…all? All of which flowers ? Marigold or Jasmine?

Mr Bose said ..no what I meant is pack all the flowers which you have. Every single flower. I want to buy them …

She was surprised..and silently prayed to God in her own way ..it was first time in 50 years that she can go without having a single flower or flower garland to be sold out…

She gave Mr Bose the sack full of flowers… He carried them all … And paid her 600 rupees.

540 was the total amount and 60 rupees just as a token of appreciation.

She said bluntly sir …in this 50 years of selling flowers nobody can say I have taken even 1 rupee extra from anybody…

I cannot take any extra money..

I will take what only 540 rupees…

She joined her hands..

Mr Bose asked her nagged her a lot .. thinking she will be convinced easily..but alas! She was different..

Her no meant no.

Mr Bose had to pay her only 540 rupees..

He couldn’t believe this has actually happened.. when in real life we think they are opportunist.

So always don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

A stranger taught That particular day to Mr Bose so much!

Unforgettable

  1. My word that old lady really had very strong conviction that it was wrong to overcharge anyone, and she stuck to it. These days that is quite rare people no longer have scruples and most people would have taken the kind man’s money.
This woman is an example to all of us.

Good story Sayoni. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Truthfully, this is a big lesson to be learnt about life. Not taking advantage of others and letting your no be no. Ofcourse Mr. Bose wasn’t taking advantage of the Old Lady, instead he was doing a very chivalrous deed.
    Lovely Story, Sayoni.
