Losing and Gaining

What sacrifices have you made in life?

We make sacrifices in life when we let go of a chance at something
which we hold as being important to us, but not as important as the
choice we make instead.

What exactly makes something a sacrifice? Everything we do in our
life, has a cost, with ‘time’ being one of the most common costs we
end up incurring everything we do. Sometimes the cost we pay for
something is so high for us that it becomes a sacrifice. We cannot
possibly move ahead in life without a sacrifice; we do it or someone
does it in our stead, a sacrifice is always made for the life that we
eventually succeed in making for ourselves.

There are sacrifices in life that we make and forget and then there
are those that we never forget about. What we sometimes forget is that
the possibilities associated with ‘what if’ is innumerable, and
carries no assurance of whether what we had imagined would have come
true even if the sacrifice wasn’t made.

Some people never realise the sacrifices they make, they are always
too focused on what has to be done and that is how they spend their
lives with a smile on their face, without any threads of doubt or not
having taken the other path or not having attempted the other crucial
decision.

Then not to forget about those who make use of the term ‘sacrifice’ to
define the later occurrences in their life. They don’t necessarily
make a sacrifice or it wasn’t a sacrifice when the decision was made,
but when the future doesn’t turn out to be a favourable one then it
seems like a good decision to re-label a past instance as a sacrifice.
For example, one of my relatives has a son who was never good at
studies or showed any promising skill at anything else as such, and
his life turned out well if not very well. Yet his mother insisted
later that her boy could have done wonders if the boy’s father’s side
of the family had collected and given the money for his education
abroad. She labelled it as them having ‘sacrificed’ his future for the
sake of saving some money.

Each one of us has our perception of how we should live out our lives
in a way in which it aligns with what we know and how we put it out
there in the world. The choices we make and the choices we leave,
slowly reveal the definition of our lives and the person we are and in
the end results in the life we learn to and love to live.

  1. I’ve been having to make a lot of sacrifices lately as my aging mother has become really sick. It is wearing me out but I also feel good for trying to do the right thing.

  2. Beautifully written. I also think sacrifice has a bigger meaning. What I think sacrifice maybe not to others. Some people are so oversmart only to make their popularity they judge others without knowing anything about them. Most of the women do a lots of sacrifices through their whole life. After marriage they go to different places leaving parents and after becoming mom they sacrifice everything for children.
