“I am sorry Chavvi, I have not come across any part time work opportunity yet. Don’t worry, as soon as I come across one, I will let you know,” said Kani to Chavvi who had come to Kani the second time for the purpose.
“Okay, please do let me know,” said Chavvi as she walked away with a smile
Kani looked at the bag in her hand, an apparent birthday gift from Chavvi. They have been living in the apartment building for fifteen years and never has Chavvi given anything to Kani as a gift.
Kani was a hiring manager at a healthcare organisation. People had somehow misunderstood her role for providing employment to everyone and there was a reason behind it.
Kani pressed the switch for the doorbell of her family’s apartment and her mother Mrs Dohre opened the door.
“Is that a gift from office?” asked Mrs Dohre noticing the bag in Kani’s hand
“No, it is a gift from Mr and Mrs Jaswal’s beloved daughter Chavvi,” replied Kani
“Really? I did not know you two had become such good friends,” said Mrs Dohre
“I have several sudden friends and well-wishers within and outside the family,” Kani said handing over the paper bag to her mother
Mrs Dohre smiled, “It must be all because of your years of hard work and success in your profession”
“Yes, but only a little. Do you know what the main reason is? It is you” said Kani
“Really,” smiled Mrs Dohre, “just when I had started to think that you may never consider the efforts I made for you right from when you were small.”
“Not those efforts mom, the other ones, the special efforts you are making nowadays,” said Kani sitting down on a chair
Mrs Dohre looked at Kani confused.
“Do you know the society security guard has a son who has not pursued studies beyond high school, and he wants me to find him work because that is what I do apparently, find people work. I initially thought people had misunderstood my profession but our housemaid told me who was actually behind spreading this misunderstanding” said Kani looking at her mother
“Isn’t that what you do, get people work?” said Mrs Dohre in a low tone
“You have told it to almost everybody around. Now, everyone thinks I am the person to contact for all kinds of employment opportunities. I owe favour to almost all my friends because they have helped employ a person you promised would find employment if they contacted me,” said Kani in a little frustrated
Mrs Dohre stayed quiet for a while. She had been a very capable housewife all her life and had a treasure trove of knowledge on several subjects, thanks to books and documentaries. But somehow her knowledge related to the employment world was a little blurred.
“So, what is it you do exactly?” said Mrs Dohre determined to get it right this time
“I hire people for my organisation. My field is healthcare. I cannot employ just anyone, one has to fit into the role that the organisation requires hiring for,” explained Kani while her mother nodded her head understanding what she could out of the words spoken.
