Name that Stick

What are your favorite brands and why?

There was a time when the word ‘brand’ didn’t really have a more elaborate meaning than what it has today. When I was small, local shops and establishments were still very popular for their products and the quality of things were far better.

Before the brands themselves were identified by people, the word ‘brand’ itself was marketed and put into people’s minds. At least that is what I saw. I am pretty sure the words ‘this is a branded’ was quite rehearsed at a point of time.

Brands represent quality and longevity and somehow the claimed appropriate value for what you are paying. Now companies no longer just sell services and products, they are aiming for a ‘healthy relationship with customers’ which is basically people regularly emptying their pockets to fill theirs.

So, if it is someone who knows me, he/she would probably guess my focus on brands might have begun with food products like it is for many, simply because I am a foodie person. But, no, it began with an Onida television and Kodak camera, mainly because my father was particularly fond of both; later there was also that Kenwood music system which could play both cassette and cd. I will never forget how it felt for the next few days or maybe weeks when the music system arrived at home.

If today I have to say what my preferred electronics brand is, it will definitely be Sony, why? My gaming console, television, earbuds, some of my influential possessions are from the brand and in future maybe a camera as well. When it comes to speakers, I have stuck to JBL for many years now.

In food, it’s more about how it is made rather than the brand and it differs for sure. I won’t name any brand here, but I will surely tell you how.

There is a particular sweet plain Sandesh (do try), which I buy from a particular brand known for making sweets. One of its new branches opened near my home and when I bought it from there, it tasted a lot better than all the other branches from where I had bought it and since then I have bought it from there only.

In clothes and shoes, whatever looks good and more importantly fits works for me and if it is discounted then better. I am not one of those who spends much in this department.

Smartphones are something people have probably owned of several brands unless one is an ardent follower of one particular brand. I like my smartphone and I like smartphones in general, simply because they can do everything which I as a child wished one day mobile phones would do. I have no preferred brand in this matter, but presently I own a Pixel, and it works quite nicely for me.

I wouldn’t venture too far into that ocean, as it might just become endless, because I could keep on naming brands right to the spices we use for food at home to the tools in my toolkit, but a certain amount of privacy is certainly needed. But, I would suggest no matter what the advertisements say, research your things before buying and most importantly don’t end up overspending on something that might not have that much worth in your life.
