Hobby of Unknown

My friend Varun once told me something that I had not heard before. We met during internship and kept in touch later as much as time and life allowed.

So, he told me about one of his classmates in school, Hemlata. The daughter of a restaurateur. This girl, she proudly claimed that spending money was a hobby and it was an actual hobby and not something she had invented.

Now, I know how much some people like to spend money. It’s their money and they can do whatever they wish with it. But can it actually be a hobby? My friend assured it wasn’t but I went home and searched it out on internet and there was no clear answer. But with AI present in our lives today, there indeed is a quick way to find a rough but elaborate answer.

In the answer I came across some interesting things like ‘retail therapy’, apparently if you go shopping with the objective of improving your mood, it is known as retail therapy. Wouldn’t work on people like me who after the initial temporary boost in mood, might fall into depression looking at the credit card bills.

There was no straight answer though, because spending money allows hobbies to prosper but when it came to the act of spending money itself, I am completely clueless as to what kind of person would actually consider it a hobby, definitely someone possessing a lot of it for sure.

The answer AI gave me as a conclusion to its answer was- ‘Yes, spending money can be a hobby — but it’s often a surface-level label for deeper interests or even emotional patterns.’ So, you can understand my confusion.
