An Understanding of a Different Kind

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

I have always had a dog since I was around 11, but it took more than a decade to truly become familiar with their understanding. Yes, they show unconditional love, fondness for their toys and favourite food, excitement for the walks, hiding from things they are not sure of, but there are a lot of details going on in between that have a far-reaching meaning.

My dog sings to a certain kind of music (although a brief internet search told me it’s howling to certain frequencies of sound, I’ll still call it singing to music). She barks when she wants to go out in the compound to look at the squirrels or some street dog passing by. She stands near the box of dog chew sticks when she wants one, and sometimes she pays attention to what I say more than any human ever would. The long list of words she understands is quite interesting yet somehow, I always like to believe that the communication is more through emotions and feelings than through words.

However, there is one thing that I would like my pet to understand and even after attempting to make her understand various times she does not. That not all beds in the house are for her to roll over. She does have a dedicated sleeping place and everything she might need for her comfort, but this one thing I cannot make her understand. I thought she would understand this with time but she rather got clever about it and when we are not looking, she is probably rolling over a bed we have told her not to. That is the reason why people many times guess correctly that I have a dog by looking at the dog hairs on my clothes.

  1. This is a warm, charming, and gently insightful piece. You capture the everyday language of love between humans and pets with humor and tenderness, showing how understanding often lives more in feeling than in words. The small, relatable detail about beds and dog hair grounds the reflection beautifully, making it both honest and endearing. A lovely reminder of how pets quietly shape our lives.
