The Name that is Ours

If you could have something named after you, what would it be?

Nowadays it has become a trend to watch the end credits of some movies in order to get to the post credit scenes. In movie halls where fast forward of a TV remote is not available, and the music is loud enough to diminish the sound of words spoken, one does have to go through a lot of names. I wonder if the objective is if some of them get remembered because clearly most of them won’t be even if a regular person not from the field would really try.

That’s the reality, no matter how special we may be in our own eyes or in the eyes of our loved ones or some of those we work with, we are just a name in many. Those we see as the ‘popular’ names are part of a very-very small percentage when you take in account the number of people in this world; and I know by experience, there are some amazing people out there, who are not known or are not popular but their names deserve to be remembered by those who know them.

In the end, it’s the names that have importance and influence in our lives, they are the only ones that matter, right?

So, coming back to the topic, the name that is ours. Our names are obviously very important to us; they are the words to our visible existence in this world. They might have been given to us by someone very special, the inspiration behind them might have been unique, and that’s what makes them one of a kind in the world where there might be many with similar names.

The question is, do we want our names to remain after us in some form of significance? Maybe, because I have known some who have no such desires at all. No, the next generation or the further next is not going to do it, it’s only us, it starts with us and ends with us only.

For me if there is something I would want to put my name on, it would be a book. It’s quite crowded out there with so many books nowadays, but there is something very special about the thought of maybe even a single copy of a book with your name existing even after a long time.
