Steps beyond Ordinary

What super power do you wish you had and why?

Us, yes human beings. We are quite aware of our existence by this point. We know our strengths and weaknesses as a living being quite well and we are also aware of the uniqueness each of us possesses from within which also reflects upon our physical being.

We know we can do incredible things, many times even the impossible. Even the simplest yet delicate efforts contribute to building this life around us and also the one we are trying to become or have let ourselves become.

Another incredible fact is that the human mind is endlessly thoughtful and creative and this is something that has allowed us to keep moving ahead, constantly looking for that string that leads to betterment in one way or another.

Now, here comes the entertainment world, wholly aware of what we are and what we are not, with their bags of imagination brought to life on screen, showing people the beyond, that they may or may not achieve and one of the prominently entertaining thoughts is having a super power. Yeah, the usual thought is, that one of the good guys gets it and uses it for a purpose that serves others as well and then having a good super power can bring in a whole world of conveniences.

Well, the popular ones have to be flying and extraordinary strength, the ones that you don’t even have to think about, then when you do get into the thought, speed comes into motion and then well wherever your imagination can take you, maybe you are that guy who like barbecue and wants to breathe fire, or someone who wants to produce food endlessly and get rid of world hunger.

If I wanted to have a super power, I would be quite selfish with it, and it would be something like being able to communicate with people no longer in this world, yes that includes those in the past including prominent figures from history. No, I am not challenging the concept of rebirth and all, well it’s a super power, you don’t really have to think that far, it makes things possible, that’s it and then maybe if you go further a backstory will come as a filler plot with a logic that shouldn’t make sense but it does. So, with this super power, I would be able to learn a lot and write a lot, try imagining a poet who never got to write that last poem he had been thinking about, or the writer whose novel was still incomplete somewhere, you know what I am getting at.

Yes, my late family of course, they would be the first conversationalists I would interact with through this power. I would keep my power hidden for sure, maybe an anonymous approach would be best. Wouldn’t want to be hunted or experimented upon. Even though we imagine the impossible, but if it happens all of a sudden, well it’s a horror story for sure.

I know, a lot of problems of the world can be solved with a super power, but since their existence will never cross the boundaries of imagination, we don’t really have to think about their practical implications and we can just do whatever we want within our minds; then whether you call it super power or not, people are doing some exceptional work out there, there have been people like that throughout history and they will continue to be in the future as well and that’s more than enough of the super power our world needs.

  1. This is a thoughtful and engaging piece that blends imagination with introspection beautifully. Anuran Chatterji captures the human fascination with superpowers while grounding it in something deeply personal and meaningful.

The idea of connecting with those who are no longer here stands out—it feels less like fantasy and more like a quiet longing for understanding and continuity. The writing flows naturally, moving from broad reflections on humanity to an intimate, unique perspective.
