What’s a piece of technology you’re convinced will exist in 20 years?
Technology has been a gradual process. It did not just happen over a year or over a few months, it took us a long time getting here. This long time is something we often forget when we look at how rapidly things are progressing nowadays. So, efforts of many over long years made the present possible.
I realised the increased pace of technological development after my paternal grandfather passed away. More than a year after he passed away, one day my mind wandered towards all the things that happened after him, things he never got to see because they just happened when he was no longer there. There were several other things but when I came to technology, my mind after a while went ‘that’s a lot’.
What about after twenty years from now? Where will technology go then? A lot of sci-fi books and movies have us believing something that feels unreal right now might come true in the coming years, especially after a long period of time.
I believe most things in terms of technology that exist today will remain, of course, in an evolved form. More AI integrated, more capable of doing what they already do, in a greater capacity. What I am more worried about though, is the environmental cost, the ever-increasing demand of people, their increasing reliance on technology, even more than their own selves.
The future cannot be predicted but I am sure there are very talented groups of people working hard to keep the world from falling apart and I hope they succeed in giving everyone including themselves a brighter future. Meanwhile we can do our part as well.
